Product review: Zero Waste Shampoo BarsHolly By Heart

Before I talk about the shampoo bars I have to say that my hair is fussy. It’s fine, coloured, gets greasy quickly with dry ends. I spent years finding a high street shampoo and conditioner that meant I didn’t have to wash it every day. So I have high expectations!
Friendly Shampoo bar from NaturalCollection
Nice cardboard box, simple design, no nonsense kind of thing. To be fair, I only tried this once. I know I should give it another go but I got impatient and tried the next shampoo bar!
Lush Jason and the Argan oil
I tried this for a week as from the first wash I was impressed. This bar is very much like normal shampoo but in bar form. It foams well and rinses out easily. It smells amazing too! The ingredients read more like a bottle (SLS and all that) but I’m guessing it’s a good starter shampoo bar. Apparently there’s a transition stage where you hair has to adjust to chemical free. Not sure if my hair has done this as this is so similar to normal shampoo!
Savon Stories banana from the Artizans
Full marks for packaging in this one. It’s beautiful! Once out of the paper wrapper is looks like fudge and doesn’t smell bad either! It lathers surprising well considering it doesn’t contain anything artificial. First wash left my hair a little clogged like I didn’t wash it out properly so I used my usual conditioner to make it feel better. I live in a hard water area so this could be affecting it. Since my first try, I’ve taken it to my parents’ house (they have a water softener) but I still seem to end up with a sticky residue. Apparently I should use apple cider vinegar to rinse it out but after covering myself in the stuff (the forums refer to it as ACV) due to a bee related incident, I’m loathed to put that stuff in my hair. To be honest, I am sorely disappointed as I so wanted to like it. With basically 5 incredibly natural ingredients this could be a dream product. I’m not sure if my issues were due to my hair type, water hardness or lack or trying but I just couldn’t get on with it.
Result: I’ve got to admit that I’m now on my second shampoo bar from lush. Yes, I know it’s still full of ‘chemicals’ and SLS and probably palm oil too but as selfish as it sounds, I like my hair to look nice. I would however encourage anyone to try Savon Stories shampoo bars. They do a clay one for greasy hair which I will try once it’s back in stock but in the meantime, I’ll stick with lush.
