Product review: zero waste hair conditionerHolly By Heart

My super fussy hair strikes again. Yes, I know I probably shouldn’t colour my hair but I do and I like it and I need lots of good conditioner to stop my hair turning into a bit frizzy knot. So, I did try to find a suitable alternative.
Pure raw coconut oil
It was reduced and I saw it online so I bought it. Everyone raves about how good coconut oil is and I had vague memories of a tub I got from Superdrug in the 90s. Excitedly I rubbed the oil throughout my hair, after I’d carefully washed it with a shampoo bar and pampered myself with Neal’s Yard organic toiletries (in a rare moment of self care in the bathroom). I rinsed it in the bath water and thought my hair felt smooth. Unfortunately I didn’t really take into account how oily coconut oil is. Yup, it’s very obvious now but I really didn’t see it coming.
Second time round, I had a plan. I rubbed it through the ends of my hair about 2 hours before I washed it. Success! I did discover that the jar I bought though was in fact a plastic jar though.
Lush jungle conditioner bar
With preparation in mind, I checked out all the lush conditioners online beforehand. I chose the jungle conditioner bar because the ingredients sounded the most natural, palm oil free but still enough conditioning power to sort out my frizz. When I made it to the shop I even bought a nice little oval tin to keep it in. My shampoo bar lives in a square tin so went for a different shape to tell them apart. Unfortunately, even after rubbing about a quarter of the bar on my hair after each wash, my hair never really felt conditioned. And the tin has buckled a bit so I can’t actually open it now!
Results: Rather saddened by this one. I’m not organised enough to coat my hair in coconut oil before I wash it so will be on the look out for other conditioners soon. I’m currently using up a secondhand conditioner I rescued from landfill (my friend didn’t get in with it). I’m tempted to try to make my own using the huge quantities of coconut oil I still have left! Watch this space for further updates on how I get on!
