Whatever project Gemma is working on, she likes to keep as much of the scrap as possible and then find a new purpose for these scraps. Gemma brings beauty to smaller and smaller scraps as part of her ‘closed-loop’ design process. Her Etsy shop, Gemma Textiles is actually the outcome of this interest.
Gemma studied fine arts and has always used a wide variety of forms to express her ideas, but textiles were always involved. And it was precisely as a student when Gemma realised she felt uncomfortable using ‘virgin’ materials, and so she gravitated towards the upcycling and re-using movement. Even before she knew this philosophy and technique had a proper name!
At the moment, Gemma has beautiful textile neckerchiefs and brooches in her shop that will go particularly well for this season. No Serial Number Magazine loves the following ones:
