Whatever project Gemma is working on, she likes to keep as much of the scrap as possible, and then find a new purpose for the materials. Gemma brings beauty to smaller and smaller scraps. Gemma.sewn.together is actually the concretion of this interest. Gemma makes and sells textile art pictures, art dolls and sculptures, clothes and accessories and home furnishings.
She studied fine arts originally, and she has always used a wide variety of forms to express her ideas, but textiles were always involved. And it was precisely as a student when Gemma realised she felt uncomfortable using ‘virgin’ materials, and so she gravitated towards the upcycling and re-using movement. Even before she knew this philosophy and technique had a proper name!
