Biohm: Research and Development Led Company That Allows Nature to Lead Innovation in the Construction IndustryFrancescaPalange
Biohm is a research and development led company that allows nature to lead innovation in the construction industry to create a healthier and more sustainable built environment. Placing biological systems at the heart of their inspiration, they combine ideologies of the circular economy and human-centred design with future-tech to create a step-change in building technologies, materials and manufacturing methods. They are driven by a continuous stream of interdisciplinary ground-breaking research. Through collaborations with industrial and academic partners they aim to lead the construction industry towards a circular future that is inspired by nature and driven by our human, environmental and economic needs. Biohm offers bio-based materials, biomimetic (nature-inspired) construction systems and a range of services.
Theyare developing completely natural, intelligent and multi-tasking materials to replace those currently used in construction for a healthier and more sustainable future. All of their materials are carbon-neutral, if not carbon-negative, and are the result of collaborations with nature and the sensitive manipulation of naturally occurring biological processes. They holistically and systemically consider every aspect of their materials’ entire life-cycle to not only eliminate any negative impact on the environment and human health but to identify opportunities where restoration could be induced. To transform preconceptions around sustainable and bio-based materials, they ensure that their materials are price-competitive and accessible to all. Their materials include Mycelium (the vegetative part of a mushroom), Orb (Organic Refuse Biocompound), PBC (Plant-based Concrete) and Biological Self-Assembling Organisms.
Biohm is also currently developing their very exciting interlocking construction system, Triagomy, which does not require permanent binders or fasteners to create durable robust structures. A beautiful convergence of parametric design and natural structural engineering. Taking inspiration from nature, the design is based on sections of a hexagon (triagonals). Bee hives and carbon molecules are some of the numerous natural structures that utilise hexagonal geometry to achieve structural integrity. The system is the result of an in-depth investigation they carried out on the construction industry and boasts unrivalled environmental, social and economic benefits.
Biohm offers a range of services driven by their research, philosophy and principles to help individuals and organisations exceed their environmental, social and economic goals. They place biological systems, or biomimetics, at the heart of their services, offering a unique advantage in thought and approach to inspire innovation.
Biohm is featured in the Autumn Issue 2018.
